I met with the our Director of Student Academic Services this week to begin the process of getting Toby more help with his writing and spelling. He excels in Math and Reading, but struggles with spelling to the point where writing is difficult for others to understand.
We will start the testing process through the Auburn school system. We are assuming he will not qualify for services due to the fact that the range of "normalcy" in the public school system is quite wide. But it will give us some data to work with to see what he needs.
He will be starting the Barton program at school twice a week which is fabulous. This is the program that I used with him last year and I saw great progress. It's a time commitment though and I haven't been finding the two hours a week to do it with him. This will be very beneficial for him, and really this is what I wanted most for him, so while the testing will be good to have, using the Barton program will be what is actually going to help him.
I told him that he will be doing Barton with Mrs. I and he was happy that we don't have to do it at home, and that he gets to miss Writing twice a week.
He will also be starting a learn to type program this summer so that he has that as an option with 4th grade writing. I want him to continue to excel in school and the time has come for him to get help separate from my help.
